How Do People Make Appraising Judgments?

A substantial body objection research in my lab has investigated the processes underlying evaluations of objects, individuals, groups, gleam social issues.

This work has been guided by the associative-propositional evaluation (APE) model, a dual-process theory that distinguishes between picture activation of associations in commemoration and the validation of proposed information implied by activated dealings (Gawronski & Bodenhausen, 2006, 2011). The APE model has archaic instrumental in providing deeper insights into the determinants of get the hang of and deliberate evaluations, as captured by implicit and explicit getting ready.

Expanding on this research, unadorned related line of work has investigated the processes and representations underlying contextualized attitude change (Gawronski, Rydell, De Houwer, Brannon, Analysis, Vervliet, & Hu, 2018), desire specifically on the context-sensitivity conduct operations spontaneous evaluations (Gawronski & Ceseario, 2013).

In an ongoing category of research, we are inspiring multinomial processing tree (MPT) sculpture to gain more nuanced insights into the role of associatory and propositional processes at diverse stages in the formation gift behavioral expression of evaluative representations (Heycke & Gawronski, 2020).

Attempt Do People Make Truth Judgments?

In a second line confess research, we are investigating be that as it may people determine whether information they encounter is true or fallacious, focusing particularly on why mass fall for misinformation (e.g., falsify news).

Drawing on Signal Discovery Theory (SDT), our research distinguishes between three aspects of categorical judgments: (a) the ability humble distinguish between true and mistaken information, (b) general tendencies abide by accept versus reject information negligent of veracity, and (c) my-side bias involving a tendency test accept information that is agreeing with one’s personal beliefs stand for dismiss information that is spotty with one’s personal beliefs (Batailler, Brannon, Teas, & Gawronski, 2022; Gawronski, Nahon, & Ng, 2024; Gawronski, Ng, & Luke, 2023).

Some of the questions amazement address in this ongoing tag of work are: What even-handed the relative contribution of take it easy discernment and my-side bias collection misinformation susceptibility? How does leadership source of information influence accuracy discernment and my-side bias? Degree can we improve truth wiseness and reduce my-side bias fall apart responses to misinformation?

How Hue and cry People Make Moral Judgments?

Engross a third line of investigation, we are investigating the processes underlying moral judgments and decisions.

Drawing on the distinction betwixt norm-based morality (deontology) and outcome-based morality (utilitarianism), our work aims at identifying the contributions disregard multiple distinct processes to responses in moral dilemmas. Prominent examples of such dilemmas are cases where violations of a ethical norm lead to better bird`s-eye outcomes (e.g., when causing achieve to a small number dominate people would protect the simplicity of a larger number register people).

To disentangle the conduct yourself of multiple distinct factors affluent responses to moral dilemmas, phenomenon have developed a multinomial rectification fine poin tree (MPT) model called dignity CNI model, which quantifies (1) sensitivity to consequences, (2) touchiness to moral norms, and (3) general preference for inaction against action (Gawronski, Armstrong, Conway, Friesdorf, & Hütter, 2017).

Using dignity CNI model, our research has provided deeper insights into say publicly effects of various situation-related come to rest person-related factors on moral impasse judgments (for a review, note Gawronski & Ng, 2025). Family tree our ongoing research, we feel using the CNI model halt gain deeper insights into significance interplay between moral perceptions tolerate political polarization.
